The Swiss franc hit an all-time high against the US dollar on concerns over the debt ceiling in the USA and the Japanese yen hit the highest level against the US dollar since the Second World War. Sterling rose against a broadly weaker Euro on Thursday as the market again focused on Euro debt issues. Italy’s borrowing cost soared in a volatile bond auction which took place amid rumours that Economy Minister Tremonti was preparing to resign. However The pounds gains were limited as UK retail sales fell at their fastest pace in a year and stores predicted a further deterioration in August. The dollar strengthened over night after a threat from ratings agency Moody’s to cut Spain’s credit rating but losses were capped as Washington again failed to reach an agreement on government borrowing.
